No Waste Left Behind, the Future in Sustainability

Unfortunately, an estimated 8 million tons of plastic are dropped into oceans every year. This takes up to 500 years to decompose and harms wildlife. Jaguar Land Rover’s commitment to sustainable living and goal of zero waste led them to take actions into their own hands. The result is a new line of surfboards, created entirely from recycled plastic.

The recycled plastic in question is actually coming from early Jaguar Land Rover vehicle design models. Polyurethane is used when Jaguar Land Rover creates a life-size clay model of a vehicle at the beginning of the design process. After being used, the polymer is usually destroyed and the clay is recycled. Jaguar Land Rover wanted to ensure they were not using any waste, so the Polyurethane that was used to create the early designs is what is being recycled into the surfboards!

Jaguar Land Rover partnered with SkunkWorks Surf Co to create the surfboards. SkunkWorks Surf Co focuses on minimizing environmental impact, the same goal Jaguar Land Rover is working towards. The surfboards were then tested by surfer Lucy Campbell, English Women’s Open Surfing Champion, off the coast of Northern Ireland.

Campbell is currently competing globally and required specific dimensions for her custom made surfboard. “It has carbon fiber rails from the nose and a carbon strip from the tail for additional strength while allowing flex to push through high-intensity maneuvers.”

“When I first heard about this project I was so excited to be a part of it,” Campbell said. “The ocean is a big part of my life so helping to raise awareness of the need to preserve it is so important to me. I didn’t know much about the car design process and it’s been fascinating to learn about how Jaguar Land Rover is giving a ‘second life’ to its materials in this way. Getting out into the water and trying the board out for the first time was awesome.”

The surfboard made its first public debut last weekend at the Jaguar Land Rover Tech Fest (a free-to-enter festival exploring the future of mobility) in London.
