El Primero Velar

In celebration of the new Range Rover Velar, Swiss watchmaker, Zenith, and Land Rover have released the second product of their long-term partnership, the Zenith Chronomaster El Primero Range Rover Velar Special Edition watch.

“The Range Rover Velar brings a new dimension of modernity, elegance, and a touch of glamour to the Range Rover family,” Gerry McGovern, Land Rover Chief Design Officer, said. “The Chronomaster El Primero Range Rover Velar, created with these very same principles, comes with a bloodline like no other and is refined for every occasion. It will stir the emotions.”

The El Primero Velar has a custom ceramised aluminum case and a beat movement of 36,000 vibrations per hour. It has a 42mm case that is finished in burnished copper (another trait of the Range Rover Velar) and a brushed slate gray dial. The El Primero Velar has three chronograph sub-dials, a winding crown with two push pieces, and a date indicator at six o’clock. On the underside of the watch you will see the Range Rover and Velar names engraved.

The El Primero Velar has a new strap that was co-developed by both brands. The strap is rubber that is coated in dark gray diamond-perforated calfskin. The calfskin is the same leather that is featured in the Range Rover interiors. The clasp is triple folding in DLC-treated titanium.

Introducing the Range Rover Velar

Land Rover is excited to announce the newest member of the Range Rover family, the Range Rover Velar! The Range Rover Velar, a mix between the Range Rover Evoque and Range Rover Sport, is a mid-size luxury SUV that sports a sleek new design, incredible capability, and all-new technology.

The purity of the Range Rover Velar’s design is unrivaled. The interior is optimized for plenty of space, and the body is constructed from a stiff and lightweight aluminum-intensive body structure. The first edition models are available in three different colors; Silicon Silver, Flux Silver, or Corris Gray. 

The Range Rover Velar also debut’s Land Rover’s new InControl infotainment system, Touch Pro Duo. The new system uses two 10-inch high-definition touch screens. This improves functionality and intuitive operation.

Additional technologies available for the Range Rover Velar are the All-wheel drive with Intelligent Driveline Dynamics, an optional active locking reaLr differential, Terrain Response, All Terrain Progress Control, Low Traction Launch, Hill Descent Control, and Gradient Release Control.

The Range Rover Velar will have the towing capacity of up to 5,500 lbs in six-cylinder models that have the Advanced Tow Assist function.

Three engines will be available for the Range Rover Velar: 180HP 2.0-liter Ingenium diesel 4-cylinder, 247HP 2.0-liter gas Ingenium 4-cylinder, and 380HP supercharged 3.0-liter gas V6 engine. All engines will have 8-speed ZF transmission and all-wheel drive standard.

The Velar First Edition will only have about 500 vehicles available in the United States and will be sold for one model year only. This model will be equipped with the 380HP 3.0-liter V6 petrol engine, full extended leather interior, copper weave carbon fiver trim finisher, Windsor leather seats finished in two tone Light Oyster/Ebony, a 1,600W Meridian Signature Sound System, and special 22-inch Split-Spoke wheels with diamond-turned finish.

The Range Rover Velar will go on sale in the United States later this year and will be priced starting at $49,900.

Bendiksen Truly Discovers ‘Ultimate Vistas’

The “Ulimate Vistas” series by renowned photographer and native Norwegian, Jonas Bendiksen, and Land Rover finally comes to a close.

In Part 1 Bendiksen drove the Range Rover from Oslo through the Dovre Mountains. In Part 2, he drove through Trollstigen. During Part 3, Bendiksen drove through the fjords around Geiranger.

For Part 4, Bendiksen took off from Geiranger to head west.

“The nice thing about working in Norway this time of year, in the fall, is that I’ll pass through a huge variation of landscapes,” Bendiksen said. “ It’s a gorgeous time to be here now, the leaves are turning, so you have this brownish orangish mixed with green, and then the rock and then a little bit of sprinkling of white on top of the peaks.”

Before he left the area around Geiranger, Bendiksen noticed the first snow had fallen, so he drove to a look out point 1500 meters above Geiranger. It was a good thing he was driving a Range Rover because he had to take switchback road all the way up. Once up top, he was able to photograph the incredible view.

After that he headed west, stopping in Norangsfjorden to photograph a unique hotel called Hotel Union Oye.

“It’s a unique hotel because its a blend at the same time as being super super charming, and you find very few places that are like that. Each room is a exquisitely and uniquely view point.”

Once he finished photographing the hotel, he finally started towards his final destination, Alesund. 

“It’s an incredible place which lies right on the edge of the world. You stand there and look out into the boundless expanse of the Atlantic ocean.”

Once Bendiksen reached Alesund he used the network of bridges and tunnels to drive as far into the ocean as he could.

“It was amazing to be driving around there right on the edge of the Atlantic ocean. It didn’t surprise me that before I knew it, the sun was setting.”

The last thing Bendiksen wanted to do was drove to a cliff behind Alesund.

“There’s a place there you can look out over the entire city. You are looking out across the most spectacular landscape with mountains falling into the ocean all around you.”

“Having started in Oslo and traveled across country through all this amazing landscape it feels like the fitting end to the journey to end up here, looking out over one of Norway’s most spectacular urban landscapes.”

Land Rover and Bendiksen have truly found some incredible “Ultimate Vistas.”

BAR Team Prepares for America’s Cup

Land Rover BAR has started the process to get ready for the America’s Cup that starts in May in Bermuda.

The boat the BAR team will be using was named ‘Rita’ by Sir Ben Ainslie’s wife Lady Georgie Ainslie and his daughter Bellatrix. Sir Ben has used boats named ‘Rita’ throughout his career, making sure the BAR team is using a winning pedigree.

Jaguar Land Rover is the United Kingdom’s biggest automotive research, development, and engineering investor. The same technology and skills that are used to develop the newest Jaguar Land Rover models are the same technology and skills that are used by Land Rover BAR to help the boat go faster.

“This process of two-way engineering and our wider STEM program across the business has enabled us to develop, learn, and provide our capabilities to the BAR team,” Tony Harper, Director of Research at Jaguar Land Rover, said. “We developed indLandustry-first aerodynamic testing to support the wingsail design which you can see on the final boat here today. From the success of this project, and with our knowledge of analysis and construction of light-weight vehicles, we have also supported the structural design of the daggerboards – the surfboard-style structure underneath the boat that allow it to fly and keep it stable when out of the water.”

Sir Ben Ainslie, the team principal and skipper, also had positive things to say about the boat and the BAR team leading up to the America’s Cup.

“It’s a great moment to see our race boat Rita hit the water in Bermuda. The launch represents the sum of all the team’s efforts to bring the America’s Cup home, and we’re delighted to get her in the water here in Bermuda,” Sir Ben Ainslie says. “We’re a start-up team, and we had to build not just the boat but the design and engineering team, the facilities and the processes to get to this point today. There are just a few short months before the racing starts at the end of May, and we will be working very hard now on the final development and testing of this boat to make sure we are ready for the racing.”

The America’s Cup qualifying rounds start May 26, 2017. The final will take place at the end of June.

New Land Rover Coupe?

Is Land Rover debuting a new coupe-like SUV to compete the BMW X6 and Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe? It looks like it!

A coupe vehicle has been spotted that closely resembles Land Rover’s Range Rover. Some people have been referring to it as a Grand Range Rover Evoque or a Range Rover Sport Coupe. This means Land Rover is adding another coupe to its lineup. They already have the Range Rover Evoque Coupe.

The original Range Rover began in the 1960s with 26 pre-production models that were given Velar badges to hide their identity. Velar is derived from the Italian word ‘velare’ that means to ‘veil’ or ‘cover’. Velar is also made of letters from the ‘Land Rover’ badge that is shown on the front and rear of each vehicle. It has been rumored that Land Rover’s new coupe-like SUV will get the Velar name.

The design of the Land Rover coupe-like SUV is similar to the Range Rover Evoque, but a little larger. It also shares some resemblance to the Range Rover Sport, specifically the sloped roof, but in the coupe-like SUV the roof sits much lower. This would get rid of the 3rd row seat that is an option for the standard Range Rover Sport. It is expected to have a similar aluminum body to the Jaguar F-PACE.

Keeping with Land Rover’s current set up, the coupe-like SUV should have an option to choose a 4 or 6 cylinder engine. The 6 cylinder engine will most likely be standard on the vehicle in the United States.

Land Rover has not yet announced this vehicle, but it is expected to debut sometime this year (possibly at the Geneva auto show in March) and start being sold as a 2018 model.

Only time will tell, hopefully sooner than later.
