Land Rover Dallas is celebrating the upcoming launch of the world’s first premium compact SUV convertible, the Range Rover Evoque, that will be going on sale in 2016!
In the video below, forty meters below the streets of London, the first prototype of Land Rover’s new Range Rover Evoque Convertible was granted exclusive access to the 26-mile network of Crossrail tunnels for a development test. Engineers were allowed the opportunity to drive the disguised Evoque Convertible with its roof lowered in complete privacy.
The short film begins with the highly-capable convertible being lowered into the tunnel network by crane, before negotiating a range of obstacles through the 6.2 meter diameter tunnel.
The Evoque is certainly no stranger to subterranean adventures. At its launch in 2011, the original five-door variant of the Evoque was driven through Edge Hill Tunnel in Liverpool, the first tunnel in the world to be bored beneath a major city.
The new convertible model was also recently spotted putting laps on the famed Nürburgring in Germany as well as some last-minute testing in Sweden before the snow melts.
“The Evoque lends itself beautifully to the idea of a convertible,” said design director Gerry McGovern. “This study is not a traditional convertible design execution – instead we have worked with the balance of the Evoque’s lines to retain its distinctive shape and create something that is unique and, we believe, highly desirable.”
Official specifications for the Evoque convertible have yet to be revealed, but Land Rover confirmed that it will be built alongside the five-door and coupe Evoque models at its plant in Halewood.
