The single most important thing you can do for your car battery is use it. An idle battery loses its charge and, when it does, its chemistry changes. Sulfates from the sulfuric acid inside the battery build up inside the battery, weakening its ability to keep a charge. A battery left unattended on a shelf for six months is likely to die. Placed in a car that gets normal use, the same battery will last years. At Land Rover Dallas in Dallas, Texas we want your car battery to be fully functional at all times, after all, it is essentially the heart of your vehicle and you should always look after it. Here are a few pointers to help ensure that your Land Rover’s battery will last and keep you from breaking down.
Before you start any kind of work on your battery, make sure your engine is shut off and that you have disconnected the battery cables and removed the clamps. Never smoke or wearing any kind of conductive jewelry while under the hood as well.
Always keep in mind that a clean battery leads to a longer lasting battery. You may notice some powdery deposits on the top of the terminal which is most likely caused by battery acid. If you want to rid your battery of these unwanted deposits, sprinkle some baking soda onto each terminal and then use a toothbrush to scrub away the all gunk so that your battery is left clean and unobstructed.
Examine the battery clamps and cable to see if they are corroded or frayed. If they look like they are in pretty bad shape, then you may want to consider having them replaced otherwise the battery may short-circuit which may damage your onboard computers.
You may want to check the fluid level as well. If it is low, add distilled water to top it off. Keeping the fluid levels full will help extend the life of the battery. If you don’t see any fluid, it may very well be an indicator that the battery is near the end of its life.
